It all began in 1963, when Herb & Mona Hyman opened a small lounge in Brentwood, California. But this wasn’t just any brew house—it was a place where every cup had a story. Inspired by their travels, they sourced the finest gourmet coffee beans from Costa Rica, Colombia, and Kenya, bringing the same dedication to the world of tea.

Little did they know, they were speciality coffee and tea pioneers, turning their humble store into a global icon. Today, we continue their legacy—from mountaintops to countertops—crafting the finest coffee and tea, served with care in every cup, making every moment unique for our customers.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Journey

1963

Herbert Hyman established The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, originally a Corporate Café service, before launching the first café in Southern California.

1974

Expanded to 10 cafés, introducing exotic teas to craft unique blends.

1987

Made history with the invention of the Ice Blended® drink in Westwood, California

1996

Went global, launching in Asia with 29 cafés in Singapore & Malaysia. Established the Caring Cup Global Charity Program in 2005.

2019

Joined the Jollibee Group, strengthening our worldwide presence with 1,100+ cafés.

2023

Opened HomeGrounds in Singapore, our global HQ & Innovation Experience Centre.

2024

Ekaagra secures exclusive franchise rights for CBTL in India, paving the way for a thriving coffee and tea culture.
